“When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.” (Mark 6:34) Before this, the apostles returned from their missions and reported to Jesus all they had done and taught. Jesus said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest for a while.” However, the crowd would not give up the opportunity to listen to Jesus’ teaching. “People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.” (Mark 6:33) It is not difficult to find Jesus so long as we know where he is heading. This is especially so when we are really in need. He will even leave behind other matters to find us : “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go search of the stray?” (Matthew 18:12) The compassion that Jesus expressed was pragmatic and not just empty words. His initial plan was to take a rest with the apostles. Based on the quest of the crowd, he even gave up his time of rest. “And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:13-14) Pure love (the love of God) is boundless. God will never refuse anybody. Of course, God will also want us to do the same : “This is my commandment : love one another as I love you.” (John 15:12)
