“So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48) The Gospel of Luke has another saying: “Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36) “Perfect” means flawless; “Merciful” means love and generosity. In any case, Jesus requires us to live out the same image when God created us: “God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them…God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.” (See Genesis 1:27-31) What is it exactly that God requires us to fulfill His will? Perhaps "the beatitudes" prompted by Jesus can give us the answer: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3-10) These are the ways Jesus lived out his life on earth. He would also like us to follow in the same way.
