"Abraham said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' " (Lk 16:31) Jesus related Abraham’s words to describe the state of the people’s faithlessness. In fact, many people in Jesus’ time discounted His Resurrection merely as a fabrication by the Apostles. It’s not surprising, therefore, Jesus did not respond to the heckling: “He said, 'I am the Son of God.' Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.” Jesus only said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus also said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." How do we strengthen our faith? Jesus said, “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Acknowledging our shortcomings and weaknesses is a good start because only when we are humble can the work of the Holy Spirit be done in us. If we can empty ourselves and humbly listen to God’s word and the Church’s teaching, the Spirit will fill our hearts, and our souls will never be empty.
