In the past, I was like a stranger to fasting. The reason was that after the Second Vatican Council, many local churches allowed parishioners to replace abstinence on Friday by doing good works. As a result, I did not give abstinence any thought, until the lenten season when it became important to me. I remember ten years ago, the spiritual director of the visionaries in Medjugorje, Fr. Slavko, visited Hong Kong. At that time, he lived in Holy Spirit Seminary of which I was the vice superior. It was a Wednesday, and after finishing the morning talk, I invited Fr. Slavko to the dining hall for a meal. He said to me, “Today I only eat bread and drink water". In my heart I thought: ”You are nuts!”

Three years ago, I went to a Medjugorje pilgrimage for the first time. Fr. Slavko had already passed away at that time and I prayed before his grave. Afterwards, I stepped onto his journey of “only eating bread and drinking water” on every Wednesday and Friday.

Now, there are already 8 parishioners in the Church of the Annunciation who are participating in the league of “bread and water”.

Many people are afraid that only eating bread and drinking water will affect health. Mary said that those who are sick do not have to fast or abstain. In other words, if you have good health, having bread and water will not hurt your body.
