“We suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:17) St. Paul spoke of Jesus’ suffering in his preaching, yet he himself has experienced suffering as well. At one time he was imprisoned, lost at sea and even homeless. Yet these experiences have made him stronger. He is full of life and joy as he continues to be a witness for God. Finally his life ended by execution in Rome. Jesus once said, ‘Whoever follows me must bear his own cross”. The roads traveled by Jesus are the roads of love. Therefore, He also intends for us to journey upon this road of love. The love that Jesus speaks of is unique and unconditional. He is always reminding his disciples that His purpose in life is to carry out the Father’s will. The ‘glory’ that St. Paul speaks of refers to the complete joy found in God the Father. The Blessed Trinity represents a living that is totally devoted to others. When we are able to sacrifice ourselves for others in the name of justice and peace, our hearts will be inflamed with Jesus’ love, because God is love. Whenever we are in the face of difficulty and pain, Jesus becomes close to us; He does not leave our side. In fact he would leave all ninety-nine sheep to find the one that is lost. Therefore we are always in Jesus’ heart – and that is especially true when things are not going well.
