Archbishop Thomas Collins of the Archdiocese of Toronto strongly condemned the Toronto Catholic School Board for its incompetence. In addition to wasting resources, it does not run schools according to the Catholic principles of education. The school board is facing the danger of being taken over by the City of Toronto.

I admire the courage of Archbishop Collins. Although he is the honorary chairman of the school board, he did not hesitate to use stern language to condemn his subordinates for inappropriate behaviours.

A retired teacher, who once taught in a Catholic high school in Toronto, told me:“Many teachers, although they are Catholics, taught what are opposite to Catholic morals and teachings.”

I believe that Archbishop Collins used the Hartmann’s Report to express his dissatisfaction with the school board.

Funding of the Toronto Catholic School Board comes completely from government support, with independent administration. The system has aroused dissatisfaction from people of other religions because there are only two school boards in Toronto: Toronto Public School Board and Toronto Catholic School Board.

Although there are wilting branches inevitably on a big tree, the misbehaviours of the Toronto Catholic School Board cannot just be described as “wilting branches”.

I pray earnestly to God to grant Archbishop Collins the wisdom, courage and perseverance to rejuvenate this “wilting tree”.
