Bishop Tong accepted a radio interview on July 30th, the event had aroused an extensive discussion by the public. Bishop Tong regarded that the school drug testing scheme could be a quick way to detect drug addicts. However, promotion of healthy life values would be the permanent cure. He said, “When the youth experience their value of life with a positive sense of mission, they would not have to resort to drug abuse.”

Some people believe that drugging can increase creativity, inspiration or reducing pressure. Some even think that drug use is the best way to lose weight. But after realizing themselves been misled on the wrong path, returning to the right track is not easy at all.

Why do teenagers so easily fall into the whirlpool of drug use? Some scholars used smoking as an example: The cigarette advertisements boasted smokers with “unique character” and “stylish looks”. Their promotion has attracted young people to imitate these images. However, before acquiring any “characters” or “styles” they have already turned into severe smoke addicts.

No wonder Fr. Don Bosco (Father and Teacher of Youth) devoted himself by training young teachers as his mission, as young people like to emulate the achievement of others. As a result, St. Dominic Xavier became the learning image of the Salesian community.

Recently I visited a voluntary drug treatment center at Shek Koo Chau. One of the inmates told me that it was his seventh admission there. He is over forty now, among which 20 years he spent in prisons. He quit school at the age of 14, and became a jobless hooligan. His first attempt on drug was purely out of curiosity. He is hoping that he will be successful in curing his addiction this time. I told him we will pray for him.

Jesus once said, our inner demons need fasting and prayers in order to drive them away. Without sacrifice, it is impossible to defeat the demons within our mind.
