“But they urged him, ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.’”(Luke 24:29) It is very meaningful for Luke to use the word “urged” as it expresses an active attitude. Jesus said, “Many are invited but few are chosen.” If these two disciples did not urge Jesus, history may have to be re-written. At that moment, Jesus gave the impression that he was going on farther! “The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.” When Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, their eyes were opened. According to the explanation in the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, the virtue of the two disciples being friendly to people whom they did not know was rewarded the comfort of Jesus appearing to them. On the road, Jesus took the initiative to talk to the two disciples. However, it still required that they would listen carefully. Of course, they did so, as they said, “Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?” As a matter of fact, Jesus is always waiting for us.
