“He will not shout or raise his voice or make loud speeches in the streets. He will not break off a bent reed or put out a flickering lamp. He will bring lasting justice to all.” (Isaiah 42: 2-3) Matthew used Isaiah’s prediction on Jesus to prove that He was the Messiah. But the people at that time, especially the rabbis and Pharisees, made light of it. They tried to put Jesus in danger. When Pilate tried Jesus, he already knew that Jesus was sent to him due to the priests’ jealousy. He already knew that the priests wanted him to die. Pilate wanted to protect himself at the expense of Jesus who was innocent. Though he washed his hand in public, he was still an accomplice. Two culprits were on the cross with Jesus. One of them said, ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ The other rebuked him, ‘You receive the same punishment. Aren’t you afraid of God? We get what we deserve; but this man has never done anything bad.’ And then he said, ‘Jesus, when you come as a king, please remember me!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Truly I tell you: today you will stay with me in Paradise.’ How beautiful this dialogue is! What a blessing this dialogue is! We have to develop a habit to love justice, or we will be helping the wicked to take advantage of the weak.
