“The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time.” (Matthew 13:20-21) This “Root” means to be fully devoted to the life of Jesus, as St. Paul said, “Yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me.” “Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.” (John 15:4) However, the branches remaining on the grape tree might not necessary be strong. Similarly, we might not be able to enter the kingdom of heaven though we have accepted the Sacrament of Baptism. The kingdom of heaven requires us to strive and seize to enter. Not anyone who says only, “Lord! Lord!” can enter the kingdom of heaven. Only for those who follow and practice my Father’s will, can enter the kingdom of heaven. How can we keep this “Root” within us? Hear what Jesus said, “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: ‘Rivers of living water will flow from within him.’” (John 7:37-38) “Believe and follow” means listening to God’s word and receiving Christ’s Body and blood. Only in this way, can we maintain and keep the life of Christ in the inner most part of our soul.
