“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35) The term “Holy Spirit” is not common in the Old Testament, but equivalent names such as “the almighty” or “my spirit” are used very often. “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2) Since Lord Jesus has revealed the inner life of God, the term “Holy Spirit” thus obviously indicates the third place of God. It is the power of the Holy Spirit that leads to the descending of Jesus into his mother’s womb. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” While in his mother’s womb, John the Baptist was also sanctified by the Holy Spirit. “He will be filled with the holy Spirit even from his mother's womb.” (Luke 1:15) On the day of Jesus’ baptism, John testified further, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him.” (John 1:32) “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: “Rivers of living water will flow from within him.” He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive.” (John 7:37-39) We can say that the Holy Spirit and Jesus are the work of salvation and they are inseparable. When Jesus ascended to Heaven, the Holy Spirit continues the work of salvation started by Jesus, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name--he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you. (John 14:26) Let us be bold with our open hearts to respond to God’s call, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
