“Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?”” (Luke 5:34) The spirit of fasting concerns the heart and soul to be closer with God, rather than the pursuit of people’s praise. Jesus said, “When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face.” (Matthew 6:17) This is the truth. When Jesus began to preach, he had been staying in the wilderness and fasted for forty days and nights. We can see that Jesus did not oppose to fasting. Jesus also once said, “This kind can only come out through prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29) Therefore, prayer and fasting are the necessary ways to obtain God’s grace. Jesus allowed His disciples to not fast like the Jewish people. It is simply to prepare the disciples to enter the threshold of the New Testament. Although we belong to the times of New Testament, fasting is always the best prescription to cultivate ourselves along with helping us to serve our Lord. “A perfect Jade needs carving and polishing.”
