“Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.” (Luke 8:1) During the time of Jesus’ preaching, the expense required were mainly contributed by the women, but Jesus’ life was one of frugality. Please listen to the words of Jesus: “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” (Matthew 8:20) “Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.” (Luke 10:4) “Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you.” (Luke 10:7-8) Aside from the twelve disciples who accompanied Jesus, “there were also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.” (Luke 8:2-3) For those women who followed Jesus, not all of them were holy and blessed in the past. It seems that from the Jews’ perspective, Jesus’ entourage could be regarded as a troupe of sinners. Therefore, those who followed Jesus would easily be “labeled” and “branded” as a “guilty person”. As of today, if we showed a little more enthusiasm, people might also start pointing behind their back. Indeed by following Jesus the chance of being labeled by others seem to be inevitable.
