He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey.” (Luke 9:3) Jesus persuaded his disciples to take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money! Here let me add that Mark’s gospel permitted them to bring shoes and walking stick. According to the definition of Bosco Bible: The ‘shoes’ in Mark’s gospel were sandals which people in those days must wear, and ‘stick’ was a tool for walking. Matthew’s gospel, however, did not permit taking shoes or stick, because the ‘shoes’ he referred to were long boots, and the ‘stick’ represented a defending weapon. For Jesus, excess is excess! Then what is important? According to Mark’s recording, Jesus was sending his disciples two by two to evangelize. Because it was ‘two’, not ‘one’, therefore the disciples had to bring the spirit of ‘loving one another’ to evangelize. In actual fact, they must always keep Jesus in their midst. For “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Matt. 18:20) At the same time, Jesus ordered his disciples not to pay too much attention to the quality of everyday living. “Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you.” (Luke 10:7-8) Working for Jesus is a joyful and satisfying thing, but we must be at peace and rely on the Lord.
