“The Kingdom of God does not come in such a way as to be seen. No one will say, ‘Look here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’; because the Kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:20-21) “The history of the Kingdom of God can obviously be divided into three stages. The first stage is the preparation: The Israelites became the chosen people. (Deuteronomy 7:6-11) The second stage is the period when God acts through the Church in the world. The third stage is the completion of the Kingdom of God, also called the stage of the heaven.” (Lexicon Biblicum Sinicum No.191) The Kingdom of God in chapter 17 of the Gospel of Luke belongs to the second stage. We need to be vigilant in this stage. Quoted from the first epistle of Peter, “So then, keep your minds ready for action. Keep alert and set your hope completely on the blessing which will be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. “ (1 Peter 1:13) Jesus pointed out that his presence, especially his presence in this present stage, was the symbol of the Kingdom of God that would come in the future. He said, “And I tell you more: whenever two of you on earth agree about anything you pray for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, I am there with them.” (Matthew 18:19-20) Trust, humility, and repentance are the important elements of ‘the citizens of the Kingdom of God’. It is because Jesus said, “I tell you: the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the Kingdom of God ahead of you. For John the Baptist came to you showing you the right path to take, and you would not believe him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. Even when you saw this, you did not later change your minds and believe him.” (Matthew 21:31-32) Human beings, when first created by God, were supposed to be immaculate. Although our first parents disobeyed God and were expelled from the Garden of Eden, God predicted that one day human beings will be victorious over the devils, “I will make you and the woman hate each other; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your head, and you will bite their heel.” (Genesis 3:15) ‘The offspring of the woman’ refers to the wicked people, but it also refers to the Savior, Jesus, who is our leader: “Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the first-born Son, superior to all created things. For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, lords, rulers, and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him. Christ existed before all things, and in union with him all things have their proper place. He is the head of his body, the church; he is the source of the body’s life. He is the first-born Son, who was raised form death, in order that he alone might have the first place in all things.” (Colossians 1: 15-18) Only He defeated the devils, so St. Paul called Him the ‘New Adam’: “Sin came into the world through one man, and his sin brought death with it. As a result, death has spread to the whole human race because everyone has sinned. There was sin in the world before the Law was given; but where there is no law, no account is kept of sins. But from the time of Adam to the time of Moses death ruled over all mankind, even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam did when he disobeyed God’s command. Adam was a figure of the one who was to come. But the two are not the same, because God’s free gift is not like Adam’s sin. It is true that many people died because of the sin of that one man. But God’s grace is much greater, and so is his free gift to so many people through the grace of one man, Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:12-15) When we live in mutual love and in accordance with His holy will, we live within the boundary of the Kingdom of God.
