“Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mathew 20:28) Jesus said these specifically for reminding His two disciples, James and John, for each of them had wished that in the Kingdom of Jesus, one of them would sit at His right side, the other at His left side. At that time, the disciples still had not understood that the kingdom of the Messiah was not from the earth, though that was the third time Jesus had mentioned about his sufferings. When Jesus talked about His sufferings for the first time, Peter came to interfere. Jesus had blamed him; Now that James and John both did not get what Jesus meant, they were only hoping to get the important seats for themselves when Jesus’ kingdom arrives. Even so, this time Jesus’ tone was not as harsh as toward Peter. He just said: "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" Then James and John understood the fundamental requirement to follow Jesus, and responded right away: "We can." This was the recognizable humble virtue of the two brothers. Actually, many of Jesus’ apostles had already left Him due to His preaching were too difficult. John expressed his feeling in his gospel writing: “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. “(John 1:9-11) A total sacrifice is what Jesus had left us with as the highest standard of how to serve another.
