“But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” (Luke 13:3) In this chapter, Jesus repeated these words twice. He said that whether the killed Galileans or the eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them, their sufferings does not show that they are more guilty than the others. Jesus emphasized that only “repentance” can free us from eternal punishment. He reminded the people who have not encountered misfortune to not be self-satisfied. Jesus continued his teaching with the parable of “a fig tree bears no fruit” as a reminder: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, 'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. (So) cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?' He said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.'” (Luke 13:6-9) God’ s mercy is infinite, if humans continue to choose to stay in the old rut, they will not pass through God’s justice, because they are only deceiving themselves as well as others: “Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?' Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.'” (Matthew 7:21-23) Lord, please teach us to constantly live according to the conscience (voice of the Holy Spirit within us).
