‘Judas accepted the bread and went out at once. It was night.’( John 13:30 ) According to the Jewish custom, the host dips the bread in the sauce and then gives it to his most beloved. Jesus was still hoping against hope that Judas would not betray him. Sadly, Judas missed the moment of receiving grace. ‘As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered him.’ Still respecting the decision that Judas made, Jesus said to him, “Be quick about what you are doing!” John used ‘night’ to describe Judas’ situation. It is difficult for us to comprehend that love gets a betrayal of friendship in return. Nevertheless, everything that has occurred has its own cause. Our greed knows no limits. Judas became a man without morals only for thirty coins. Our mind can be eroded by money without our being aware of it. There was a wealthy young man who wanted to be a follower of Jesus, but when Jesus asked him to sell everything and give the money to the poor, he left sadly. Deep in Judas’ mind, he could have remembered what Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money.” However, when a soul is in critical sickness, it can be easily manipulated by satan. Although Judas loved money, he did not want to put Jesus to death. He probably thought Jesus would be able to walk through the middle of the crowd as he had done in the past, but when he heard that Jesus had been apprehended, he immediately returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests. If he had asked Jesus to forgive him and had not hanged himself, (like Peter who cried outside the chief priest’s courtyard after he had denied Jesus), history would have been rewritten in a different way. After all, there was a lack of Judas’ friendship for Jesus. Possibly he had never loved Jesus. He followed Jesus for his own personal benefit. A saint once asked Jesus that since He already knew many priests would betray Him, why He still chose them to become priests. Jesus said, “I need them to administer sacraments.” In other words, even priests need to work hard to become virtuous. The Kingdom of God is seized by force. No one can be exempted.
