“It is I. Do not be afraid.” (John 6:20) It was so encouraging to hear such saying from Jesus. When Jesus was walking on the sea towards the boat of the disciples, they were terrified for the wind was strong. When Jesus said, “It is I. Do not be afraid!” we can imagine that the disciples were easily calmed down. According to the Gospel of Mark, “He got into the boat with them and the wind died down.” (Mark 6:51) The Gospel of Matthew added the passage of Peter walking on water towards Jesus. (See Matthew 14:28-33) At the end Peter still needed help as Jesus said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31) “Do not be afraid!” became his most used phrase. At Corinth, “One night in a vision the Lord said to Paul, "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you.” (Acts 18:9-10) When Jesus raised the life of Jairus’ daughter, he said, “Do not be afraid; just have faith and she will be saved.” (Luke 8:50) Jesus understands the weakness of humans. He taught them with patience and skill rather than condemning them. On the way to Emmaus, the two disciples were extremely disappointed however Jesus appeared to them as a stranger. He talked to them and woke them up from a state of loss. Jesus himself is “The way, the truth and the life” He will never let us go empty handed, providing we are willing to learn and listen with humility.
