“If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?” (Luke 11:13) Jesus pointed out that the greatest gift of God to mankind is the Holy Spirit. First of all, according to the angel’s indication, Jesus’ mother “was found with child through the holy spirit.” (Matthew 1:18) This angel also disclosed the identity of Jesus as the beloved Son of God. “After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17) As preparation for his future missionary work, “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.” (Matthew 4:1) St John the historian emphasized, “God does not ration his gift of the Spirit.” (John 3:34) Jesus has promised that after he ascends to heaven, the Holy Spirit will continue his unfinished work, especially during adverse circumstances, “When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say.” (Luke 12:11-12) There is no alternative for the Holy Spirit is essential in the path of our salvation, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” (John 3:5) John continued to point out that, “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'" (John 7:37-38) So when we pray to God, we believe that God has promised what we have asked, because the Holy Spirit will help us understand what will be the best need for our soul.
