“Whoever does not follow me carrying his own cross cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:27)

There was a very successful entrepreneur who sold his assets before he retired as all five of his children did not want to inherit their father’s business. He respected their decision and did not condemn them. However there are many parents who will react strongly with opposition when their children’s choices differ from their own expectations, especially when their children are willing to join the rank to serve the Lord. Therefore Jesus said, “If you come to me, without being ready to give up your love for your father and mother, your spouse and children, your brothers and sisters, and indeed yourself, you cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26)

I know a priest who gave up his career as a Medical doctor and joined the clergy; his father refused to communicate with him. Fortunately, his father was willing to see him during his last moments. Jesus described this very appropriate, “Each one will have as enemies those of one's own family.” (Matthew 10:36)

It seems that Jesus’ teaching is very cold and detached. Actually Jesus is trying to challenge the selfishness of humans. Every human has a unique innate mission. It means that in the path of following the Lord, each one of us has their own distinguishing feature and brilliant characteristics. Whoever follows Jesus (not necessary priests or nuns), should have the courage to say “no” to hedonism. Eating, drinking and gaming are not the ideal life for Christians, but rather we should learn from Jesus to be simple and humble. He said, “"Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."
