When Jesus called the twelve disciples to follow him, he certainly knew that Peter and Judas would betray him. But Jesus did not forsake them and he gave them a chance to repent. After Peter unmistakably professed his love for Jesus three times, Jesus immediately established him as the head of the Church. Unfortunately, Judas did not ask for God's mercy. To forgive is to give those who have offended us a chance to renew themselves. Forgiving does not imply forgetting completely what has happened; for instance, the events of 9/11. We do not need to recall repeatedly the events that took place; nor do we need to analyze them ad nauseam because things that go wrong often do not make much sense. The source of hatred is the lack of love and trust. With an extra bit of love and trust, hatred in the world will naturally diminish.
