Jesus' way of life was totally incorporated into the society in which He lived. In order to change the world, He had to first become a part of it. Thus, when Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs to preach the Gospel, He told them not to choose where to stay, or what to eat. "Eat whatever is given to you", He said. In fact, the best way to evangelize is to become immersed in the way of life of those around you. "Be sad with the sorrowful, be happy with the joyful". Jesuit missionaries who came to China in the 17th Century were welcomed by the local scholars. One reason was because they discarded their western garments and wore instead the local garments. Another reason was because they did much research and learned the Chinese religions well, combining the essence of the Gospel with the principles of Confucius and Mencius. Regardless of the great divide in culture and education between different groups in the world, mankind is naturally good because we all bear the mark of the Holy Trinity. If we are willing to put faith in one another, it will help to bridge the distance that exists between us.
