When Jesus mentioned that Peter would eventually sacrifice himself for the Lord, Peter asked, out of curiosity, about John’s future. Jesus did not answer him directly, but said, “How does his future concern you? You only need to follow me.” Jesus’ answer was noteworthy. God’s plans for everyone’s life are multifaceted, like flowers in a garden. Chinese martyrs included many types of people, such as bishops, priests, sisters, messengers, housewives, those who are married and those who are chaste. Fr. Francis Li, who now serves the Hong Kong diocese, has a grandfather who was supposed to be beheaded during times of religious persecution. However, he was only injured and did not die. Eventually, his grandsons even became priests. St. Therese of Lisieux prayed for priests in the seminary, but St. Francis Xavier often traveled, even to Asia. Both of them had once been named patrons of the community of the Holy Order. Martyrs witness the truth and their belief with their own lives. In many situations, God may not require us to sacrifice our lives, but may ask us for our patience, forgiveness and compassion. Let us pray that the Chinese Martyrs will help us fulfill God’s will.
