“Do your best to preserve the unity which the Spirit gives by means of the peace that binds you together,” says Paul. (Ephesians 4:3) Working for peace is not the same as segregating oneself from all conflicts. When facing good and bad, we will need to make a choice. When we find out what is good and hold fast to it, the outcome may not always be pleasant. As Jesus says, “I do not come to bring peace, but a sword.” Without a doubt, Jesus does not wish to see separation; however, He respects contrary opinions. Indeed, Jesus becomes the figure of opposition for the sake of creating peace. Jesus works for unity; and we are his instruments. What we need to do is to live according to God’s plan, although it may not be praised or accepted by others. The Holy Spirit always compensates for our insufficiencies. When our decision is not based on our own reputation, but God’s intention, we make peace in heaven. Thus, we shall not be afraid when we are with Jesus, for He is the Lord of peace.
