“I want you to be free from anxieties.” (1 Corinthians 7:32) The virtue of leading a single, unmarried life was important to Paul because it allows one to fully dedicate one’s life to God. However, Jesus also talked about the question of an unmarried life. He pointed out the unmarried life requires a special grace, the blessing to sacrifice for God’s kingdom. In fact, John was the only one of Jesus’ twelve apostles to remain unmarried. When Jesus left the earth, He left John to care for His own mother. Why does Paul wish so much for Christians to be free from anxiety? In the early church, there was an expectation that Jesus’ return was imminent, perhaps within their lifetimes. Therefore, Paul wanted the faithful not to be too preoccupied. Today, the Church recognizes both married and unmarried life as holy vocations, because both are ways to do God’s will. If we can offer up all our worries to God, and put all our trust in Him, the peace of God will rest with us.
