Recently, I have visited Caritas Community Centre in Tsuen Wan, Lai King Rehabilitation Centre, Lok Kin Workshop in Tsing Yi and Lok Wo Hostel. The Lai King Rehabilitation Centre focuses on early pyschosis and Tsing Yi Centre focuses on the mentally handicapped.

I once inquired whether patients with autism have an opportunity to improve. Paul Yu, Supervisor of Lok Kin Workshop, said to me, “It is almost impossible if we want them to restore to health totally, but if we show more compassion to them, they can improve. In the past, there were patients with autism who came to work in the workshop. At the beginning, they make trouble as usual. The colleagues began to lose patience and requested them to leave. I requested the colleagues to tolerate for a longer period of time, because their troubling behavior is only asking us to value and pay more attention to them. Finally, due to our acceptance they became very cooperative. Paul Yu added, “Caritas has a charism of understanding and compassion, care and service, human development and unity of work".

Isn’t the charism of Caritas an essence of christianity for every Christian to follow?
