“Among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” (Matthew 11:11) John is the last prophet in the Old Testament. He told his disciples directly when Jesus appeared, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” Since then, the New Testament was unveiled. Jesus used the words “the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John” to indicate that the value of the New Testament is greater than that of the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, the blood of cows and sheep were used as sacrifice. In the New Testament, it was Jesus’ body and blood that were used as offerings. Receiving John’s baptism signified personal repentance. Receiving Jesus’ baptism not only means the forgiveness of sins, but also the sharing of God’s life. Citizens of the New Testament, i.e., the baptized faithful, were already sharing God’s life in this world. People of the Old Testament did not have such a privilege. The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist instituted by Jesus has also become a sign of sharing God’s life for us. John had said, “He (Christ) must increase, but I must decrease.” Let us also possess this humble heart!
