Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, emphasized, at the homily at World Youth Day Opening, on the importance of opening our hearts to the Holy Spirit.

“Secular wisdom claims that leopards do not change their spots, but we Christians believe in the power of the Spirit to convert and change persons away from evil to good; from fear and uncertainty to faith and hope.”

The work of the Holy Spirit is out of men’s expectations. Cardinal Pell pointed out that some Christians may consider themselves less zealous and faithful or unworthy and ignorant. However, they open themselves to the Holy Spirit, allowing God to act through them.

To experience peace and joy at heart (fruits of the Spirit), we have to “learn the language of the Cross and inscribe it on our hearts.”

“Following Christ is not cost free, … because it requires struggling against what St. Paul calls the ‘flesh’, our flat relentless egos, old fashioned selfishness.”

Cardinal Pell concluded by encouraging the 150, 000 youths to practise self discipline, listen and pray.

At the same time, he addressed those without religion : Man’s final goal is “Love”.

“While there is life there is always the option of change (renewal, conversion)!” The is a proverb for those striving to sanctify themselves.
