In a recent New England Journal of Medicine article, Dr Robert D. Truog of the Harvard Medical School and Dr. Franklin G Miller of the National Institutes of Health bioethics department said that "legal death", such as "brain death" or "cardiac death", that came out of previous organ donation cases, is not true death.

At the 18th session of International Congress of the Transplantation Society on August 29, 2000, Pope John Paul II stated that the transplantation of organs conforms to Catholicism’s morals and guidance only if the organs are removed “after death that is from the body of someone who is certainly dead.”

Therefore, when medical staff asks families of the severely wounded about transplantation of organ, everyone should think through this issue carefully.

When Chinese athlete Liu Xiang withdrew from the 110-meter hurdles competition at the last minute at the Beijing Olympics, people felt sad.

It is understood that he has had the same injuries for 6-7 years. However, he kept performing well despite the ailment over this period, which does not happen often among athletes.

Let’s hope that, learning from this experience in the Olympics, he can really recuperate and completely recover.
