The government of the Hong Kong SAR has tabled amendments for the Domestic Violence Ordinance in an attempt to extend its coverage to, inter alia, same-sex partners cohabitating. What it is trying to achieve is quite obvious: it is paving the way for legalization of same-sex marriage in the future.

It is funny (but indeed is true) that as soon as same-sex marriage was legalized several years ago in Canada, there began to accumulate a group of people who wanted their same-sex marriage dissolved. Because there was no law on the same-sex divorce at that time and the legislative process took time, these people had to wait for quite some time before they got their wishes.

What is allowed by law may not necessarily be right in terms of morality and conscience.

“The intimate partnership of married life and love has been established by the Creator and qualified by His laws…. For, God Himself is the author of matrimon.” (Gaudium et Spes – Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World 48:1)

“The well-being of the individual person and of human and Christian society is intimately linked with the healthy condition of that community produced by marriage and family.” (ibid, 47:1)

“By their very nature, the institution of matrimony itself and conjugal love are ordained for the procreation and education of children, and find in them their ultimate crown.” (ibid, 48:1)

“Christ chose to be born and brought up in the family of Joseph and Mary…. and the Church is a home and family of God for everyone.” (Catholic Doctrine 1655)

“Family” needs special protection and support from society, because harmonious families are one of the elements of a stable society.
