On September 20th , the Sunday Life of Ming Pao Daily recorded an inspirational story. It is about the “Infinite stage @HK”. Rachel Cheung Wai-ching is a young pianist from Hong Kong, She is currently 17 years old. She received fifth place at the “Leeds International Piano Competition” which hold every three years. She was also the youngest contestant out of the 68 participants from 45 countries. (The competition is ranked the same standing as “The Tchaikovsky Piano Competition” and “The International Chopin Piano Competition”).

In 2005, she suffered from meningitis while she was on her way to perform at St. Petersburg. She had lost her balance and her fingers were not responding properly, not to mention playing piano. All of a sudden her life seemed hitting rock bottom. She said, “ I was very depressed at that moment, my fingers were not in control. Fortunately, with the support and encouragement from my parents and teachers, I started from zero again by practicing with each finger on each note. The most exciting thing happened while I was at the intensive care unit, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra called and invited me to perform at a concert in a few months, the piece was Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. the same piece I supposed to do at St. Petersburg, I had regained my confidence I clenched my teeth to face the challenges ahead.” Rachel Cheung will be performing at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall on October 23rd,, with Vladimir Ashkenazy the maestro and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Let us pray for this young musician and learn from her the spirit of persistence.
