“When the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches, and went out to meet him.” (Jn 12:12) The prophet Zechariah says as a sign, “Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, Meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass.” (Zc 9: 9) The prophet Zechariah (520 B.C.) encouraged the Israelite captives that returned to the homeland to construct the temple quickly, in order to let the King of peace ( the Messiah ) who conquered the enemies to enter the holy capital city and establish the kingdom in the world. The chosen people that had been dispersed to different places needed to return to the country for reunion. St. John pointed out that after the resurrection of Jesus; he then understood Zechariah's prophecy was referring to Jesus. It was pardonable that the apostles knew and understood afterwards, because the kingdom that Jesus establishes is a new heaven and a new earth which far exceeds the Jews’ narrow sense of nationalism. At the time, the Pharisees were also annoyed and said, “Do you see that we prevail nothing? Behold, the whole world is gone after him (Jesus).” (Jn 12: 19) Jesus said to the Hebrews who were seeking the truth, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” The death of Jesus, which is an unconditional true love, switches conflicts to peace.
