"Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." (John 21:5) When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. The subsequence was Paul saw that it was Jesus there! He pronounced to Peter: “It is the Lord.” Without delay, Peter wrapped his outer garment and jumped into the sea, so as to meet and greet the risen Lord straightaway. Before Peter became a follower of Jesus, he had been fishing for the whole night but had caught nothing. As soon as Jesus asked him to cast his net into deeper water, the fish came in such large quantities that they overflowed the capacity of two boats. Peter knelt down in front of Jesus and said with great emotion: “My Lord, please stay away from me, for I’m a sinner.” The significance was not whether the net was cast to the right side, or was cast into deeper water. By ways of such incidences Jesus had wanted His disciples to realize that when they proclaim the gospel in the future, they shouldn’t be overly self-assurance on their own ability or experience, but instead put the trust in God’s guidance. Jesus had said: “Without Me, you would have nothing accomplished”. This time, they had caught a total of 153 large fishes. With reference to the Studium Biblicum O.F.M.: “ The people at the time knew there were only 153 species of fish in the sea (lake). That number had a meaning of ‘the whole human race’.” It had also predicted the church that Jesus built was meant for the entire human race.
