“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life.” (John 6:40) “Sees” and “believes” show conversion of the heart. John and Peter ran together to the tomb where Jesus’ body was buried. Peter entered first and saw that the burial cloths and the cloth that had covered his head were placed in different places. John also went in and when he saw, he believed. When John first met Jesus, he liked him. So when Jesus left John the Baptist, John and Andrew followed him. Jesus asked them, “What are you looking for?” They replied, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with (believed in) him that day. To follow Jesus, following from a distance is not enough. On the road to Emmaus, the two disciples urged Jesus to stay. It was only when he broke the bread that they recognized him, even though their hearts were burning when they were traveling with Jesus on the way. As Thomas would believe only when he saw the resurrected Christ, so Jesus reaffirmed, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” “Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” It is only with the purity of heart that we can see God present on earth, appearing in each one of our brothers and sisters.
