“Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matthew 10:5-6) According to the interpretation of Studium Biblicum Franciscanum : “Jesus chose twelve apostles as the masters of the new chosen Israelites (the Church). He sent them to the ‘lost sheep’ in the Israelite family, preaching the gospel. This was because the Israelites were God’s chosen people and had priority to listen to the good news. It was only when Jesus was ascending to heaven that He ordered the apostles to preach to the gentiles.” Jesus is not rigid. He healed the servant of the centurion (a Roman) in Capernaum. In the region of Tyre and Sidon, he healed the daughter of a Canaanite woman. Jesus also preached to a woman in Samaria. There is a detailed account in the Gospel according to St John : “The woman said to him, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.” (John 4:19-26) It is clear that wherever there are ears that hear and hearts that are open, Jesus will treat every one equally.
