“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.” (Matthew 10:16) In Our Lord’s Prayer, “Lead us not into temptation” shows that we have to be “alert”, for there is always temptation around. Please pay attention to how Jesus resisted Satan’s temptation: “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’” “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’” “It is written: ‘The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.’” Jesus only quoted the word of God to ward off the temptation of the devil. Therefore, in order to avoid the chance of being tempted, we have to keep the word of God in mind. The wisdom of mankind is incomparable to the devil; in this case Eve has failed under Satan’s theory. Jesus also wanted us to be as pure and simple, just as Himself: “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, Upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations. Not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching.” (Isaiah 42: 1-4) Lord, please grant us the courage to undertake the mission that you have given us.
