“I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built. (Luke 6:47-48) When Andrew introduce his own brother Peter to Jesus, Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called “Cephas" (which is translated Peter). (John 1:40-42) “Cephas” (stone) is Aramaic language, translated in Greek as “Peter”. Later on, Jesus asked Peter: "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. (Matt 16:15-18) Obviously, Jesus himself is the real rock of the Church; he once described Himself as “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Matt 21:42) Today, apart from the church (of Peter), one cannot achieve unity of religion; apart from the Holy Bible and the nourishment of the Eucharist, the ideal of “let all be one” would be too difficult to accomplish.
