“Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”(John 1:51) “Angel”, in both Hebrew and Greek, has the meaning of “messenger”. Although it was not clearly written in the Bible that they were created, it was hinted in all relevant chapters and verses that they were created by God. Throughout the life of Jesus, angels appeared on several occasions, for example : when Jesus was tempted by the devil and when Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Blessed Virgin, St Joseph, the apostles and the zealous women all encountered the appearance of angels. “The angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” signifies that the relationship between Jesus and the heavenly Father was so intimate. The message that the angel gave Joseph further confirmed that the relationship between and Jesus and the Holy Trinity was so intimate : “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”(Matthew 1:20-21) In the time before the Exile, to avoid the danger of falling into polytheism, only the existence of God was mentioned. After the Exile, the concept of monotheism was deeply rooted in the heart of the Israelites and so the names of the angels were mentioned : Michael, Raphael, Gabriel and the seven angles that serve before the altar of God. When our deeds are holy, our guardian angels will have time to ascend to and descend from the heavenly Father. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” (Matthew 18:10)
