“Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) “Servant” is a self-deprecating label. Before God, we are all servants! “Word” can mean God’s will. Jesus’ obedience to God’s will is appropriate for all people: “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matt 6:10) Those who go against God’s will can never enter His kingdom: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” (Matt 7:21) Jesus wants to see us becoming His real siblings and the only condition for this is obeying God’s will: “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matt 12:50) On one occasion, Jesus started a conversation with a Samaritan woman when He asked her for water. In that conversation, Jesus implied that He was the Messiah and so everyone in the town came out to listen to Him afterward. Jesus was delighted and said to His disciples, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” (John 4:32). Later He continued, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.” (John 4:34) When Jesus cured a handicapped man by the Sheep Gate, the Jews were irate because He did it on a Sabbath. However, God’s will take precedence over one’s fame and shame: “I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me.” (John 5:30) Similarly, Mary could see how shameful it was to have a child before getting married. (After betrothed to Joseph but before they lived together, His mother Mary’s Holy Spirit-initiated pregnancy was already obvious. Being a righteous man, her husband Joseph did not want to humiliate her in public and wanted to dismiss her quietly.). However, she did not tell Joseph the whole truth because this was a direct relationship between God and her. The result is that God helped Mary get out of the quandary. The work that was started by God will be completed by Him—we do not need to worry too much. What is important is that we must cooperate with God and rely on Him completely.
