“Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17) The Prophet Amos said, “Hate evil and love good.” The young man asked Jesus what to do for doing good deeds. Jesus pointed out directly that to comply with “the Commandments” is the basic requirement However, “to comply the commandments” is only the first step as wealth and fame may hinder us from walking towards Heaven’s gate. Thus, Jesus asked the young man to “sell what you have”, and “give to the poor”. In this way, he will not be constrained by materialism but rather strengthen the unity with others because the kingdom of God is the place with mutual love of the Holy Trinity. Jesus wanted the young man not only to become good by himself but hoped to see him to become his disciple. Jesus therefore invited him “to carry the cross” and “to follow Christ”. The condition of “following Christ” is not simple at all! In addition to giving up materialistic life we have to “carry the cross” everyday. Please listen to how Jesus replied Paul’s question: “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.” (Mark 10:29-30) “With persecutions!” means following Jesus and to live out the life of Christ. “Inherit eternal life” and “live out the life of Christ” certainly expresses the same idea.
