“You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?” (Luke 12:56-57) When Jesus said this, his tone was serious and earnest, for the Messiah was coming to earth, but the people did not care. Please listen to the testimony of John the Baptist: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.' I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” (John 1:29-31) Jesus can see through people’s hearts and at that time he said to the audience: “Hypocrites!” (Luke 13-15) for He knew that their hearts were insensitive, therefore they could not see with their eyes and hear with their ears. Jesus used “Hypocrites!” repeatedly to condemn those who acted without conscious. “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering? 7 This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the Sabbath day from this bondage?” (Luke 13:15-16) “"You hypocrite"! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye.” (Luke 6:42) “When you pray, do not be like "the hypocrites", who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.” (Matthew 6:5) “When you fast, do not look gloomy like "the hypocrites". They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.” (Matthew 6:16) What Jesus wants to see is not “a flawless” version of us, but those who are willing to listen “the truth” and be obedient to “God’s will”.
