“No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.” (Luke 13:3) “Repent” in Hebrew means “come back, return.” The Bible uses this term to mean “change one’s mind, give up sin and embrace good, search for God, admit guilty, be humble, etc.” (Studium Biblicum dictionary no.1926) Everything in God’s creation is good. It is through humans’ disobedience to God that tarnishes the world. According to the Acts of the Apostles, the apostles’ teaching on repentance emphasized the importance of baptism because baptism is the necessary condition for faith, repentance and forgiveness. When Peter was in Rome (63-64 A.D.), he wrote to the faithful in Asia Minor, encouraging them to keep their faith: “Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you what he is revealed. Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” (1 Peter 13-16) He also invited them to try their best: “[Y]ou must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love.” (2 Peter 1:5-7) The road to eternal life begins in this life.. “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62)
