“Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” (Luke 17:18) The Jews saw themselves as the chosen people of God and so they thought it was nothing special when Jesus cured their diseases. This can explain why only the foreigner returned to praise God. Did Jesus really care that they did not return to give thanks? I think Jesus did not mind at all. However, Jesus did want everyone to have a grateful heart. This is what Jesus did: “Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them to the crowd.” (Mark 8:6) When he established the blessed sacraments, he did the same blessing and thanksgiving: “Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it.” (Mark 14:23) Please listen to St. Paul’s advice: “Entirely out of place is obscene, silly and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving.” (Ephesians 5:4) “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6-7) “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe[.]” (Hebrews 12:28) “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by God’s word and by prayer.” (1 Timothy 4:4-5) Everything we possess has been given to us not because of our own merit, so can we not be give thanks for everything?
