“Be vigilant at all times and pray!” (Luke 21:36) In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 21, described about “The destruction of Jerusalem” and “The end of the age”, which concluded with the message “Be vigilant at all times”, so that “You have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.” “To stand before the Son of Man”, the same thought can be seen from the Book of Daniel, “As the visions during the night continued, I saw One like a son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven; When he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him, He received dominion, glory, and kingship; nations and peoples of every language serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:13-14) In the theme of “being persecuted for living out the Gospel”, Matthew emphasized, “Because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:12-13) “Be vigilant at all times and pray” becomes the best prescription of salvation. While Jesus was praying at Gethsemane, He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:40-41) The parable of the foolish and the wise virgins explained clearly about the real meaning of “Be vigilant at all times and pray”: “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.' While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!' But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.' Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” When we depart from the words of God, the only place viable for us to return is the embrace of God.
