“Blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.” (Luke 7:23) According to the note in the Chinese Bible, “offence” means death that is due to disbelief. In the Gospel of John, after the miracle of feeding the five thousand, Jesus stated that He was the bread of life: “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6:53) However, some of the disciples said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” (John 6:60) and so many disciples left Jesus. “So Jesus asked the twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.’” (John 6:67-68) Peter’s response represents our true feeling: If we were to leave the Word of God, we would become deaf and lame. “[B]lessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.” The blessing depends on whether or not we can abandon our own selfishness and try our best to seek the will of God.
