Irresistible Questions

Above all the Gospel must be proclaimed by witness. Take a Christian or a handful of Christians who, in the midst of their own community, show their capacity for understanding and acceptance, their sharing of life and destiny with other people, their solidarity with the efforts of all for whatever is noble and good. Let us suppose that, in addition, they radiate in an altogether simple and unaffected way their faith in values that go beyond current values, and their hope in something that is not seen and that one would not dare to imagine. Through this wordless witness these Christians stir up irresistible questions in the hearts of those who see how they live: Why are they like this? Why do they live in this way? What or who is it that inspires them? Why are they in our midst?… The above questions will ask, whether they are people to whom Christ has never been proclaimed, or baptized people who do not practice, or people who live as nominal Christians but according to principles that are in no way Christian, or people who are seeking, and not without suffering, something or someone whom they sense but cannot name.

Widening the circle

The first step has to be mine … to live in such a way that others find Christ in me, his love, and are attracted by him. I have to draw near to others in such a way that they realise I do not know them according to the flesh (cf 2Cor 5:16), I am not looking for my own interests, nor help, nor completion, I am not letting myself be guided by sympathy or antipathy, but I welcome them like the Lord himself.
The others ought to experience that I live by Jesus, that I follow his voice and not my own ideas or opinions of others. They will see that my life is based on the Word, on his sacraments, that I listen to him in what he wants to tell me through witnesses and emissaries of the Church. And above all I seek him where he has loved me the most, in difficulties, in the dark times which are for me “the sacrament” of his abandonment on the cross, and his death.
Sooner or later … I will meet others who adhere to this life… and they are people that I have not myself chosen. The circle is widened and new cells of people, meeting together in the name of Jesus, are formed.

Living Cells

If you look around you in some cities you pass through…you would call the testament of Jesus a utopia if you did not think of him. He saw a world like this too, and at the climax of his life he appeared to be overcome by it, defeated by evil…He looked on the world just as we see it, but did not doubt.
At night he prayed heaven above and heaven within himself: the Trinity that is true Being, the real All, while outside the nothingness that passes away moved through the streets.
We, too, must do as he did…Then you will notice, with eyes which are no longer lifeless, that you look at the world and at things, but that it is no longer you looking at it: it is Christ who looks, and in you he sees again the blind needing sight, the dumb to be made to speak, the crippled to be made to walk, people who are blind to the vision of God inside and outside them, people who are immobile and crippled because they are unaware of the divine will which, from the bottom of their hearts spurs them on to the eternal movement that is eternal love.
You see and discover your…true self, which is Christ, the true reality of you in them, and having found him, you unite with him in your brother. So you light a cell of the Body of Christ, a living cell, a hearth of God where there is fire to communicate to others and with it light.

The light of the Lamb in the City

And in the spirit he took me to the top of an enormous, high mountain and showed me Jerusalem the holy city coming down from God out of heaven. It had all the radiant glory of God and glittered like some precious jewel of crystal-clear diamond.
The city walls stood on twelve foundation stones, each one of which bore the name of one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
I saw that there was no temple in the city, since the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb were themselves the temple, and the city did not need the sun or the moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and the Lamb was a lighted torch for it. The pagan nations will live by its light and the kings of the earth will bring it their treasures. The gates of it will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there – and the nations will come, bringing their treasure and their wealth. Nothing unclean may come into it: no one who does what is loathsome or false, but only those who are listed in the Lamb’s book of life.

A Church that attracts

The Church as a “community of love”, is called to mirror the glory of God’s love, which is communion, in order to attract men and women and whole peoples to Christ…
The Church does not grow through proselytising, but through “attraction”, just as Christ “draws all people to himself” with the strength of his love.
The Church “attracts” when it lives in communion, since the disciples of Jesus will be recognised if they love one another as he loved them (cf Rm 12:4-13; Jn 13:34).

A “new” pastoral programme

If we have truly contemplated the face of Christ, dear Brothers and Sisters, our pastoral planning will necessarily be inspired by the “new commandment” which he gave us: “Love one another, as I have loved you” (Jn 13:34)…
Communion is the fruit and demonstration of that love which springs from the heart of the Eternal Father and is poured out upon us through the Spirit which Jesus gives us (cf. Rom 5:5), to make us all “one heart and one soul” (Acts 4:32).

It is in building this communion of love that the Church appears as “sacrament”, as the “sign and instrument of intimate union with God and of the unity of the human race”… Many things are necessary for the Church’s journey through history, not least in this new century; but without charity (agape), all will be in vain.

The Christ like face of the Church

The first Constitution on the Church clarifies that the Council does not consider the Church as a reality closed in on itself, but in reference to Christ. “Christ is the light of peoples, and this sacred Council, met together in the Holy Spirit, ardently desires that the light of Christ, reflected on the face of the Church, should illuminate all men and women…”
In the background we recognise an image from the theology of the Fathers, which sees the Church as the moon, not giving off its own light, but transmitting the light of Christ’s sun. Ecclesiology is shown to be dependent on Christology, and linked to it.
Seeing as no one can speak correctly about Christ, about the Son, without at the same time speaking of the Father, and seeing that we cannot speak correctly about the Father and the Son without listening to the Holy Spirit, the Christological vision of the Church is necessarily broadened into a Trinitarian ecclesiology (LG 2-4). The discourse on the Church is a discourse about God, and only in this way is it correct.

Wisdom and foolishness

I wasted a lot of time chasing vanities, I spent my whole youth in useless pursuits, for I threw myself totally into learning doctrines whose wisdom was declared by God to be foolishness.
Then one day I seemed to awake from a deep sleep. As I turned my eyes to the wonderful light of evangelical truth, I understood the uselessness of the wisdom of the masters of schools of this world, made of nothing.
I bitterly regretted my miserable life and formulated a prayer. I asked to be shown a way that would open the interior life for me.
