恭讀聖瑪竇福音 12:1-8
那時，耶穌在安息日由麥田中經過；他的門徒餓了，開始掐麥穗吃。法利塞人一見，便對他說：「看，你的門徒作安息日不許作的事。」耶穌對他們說：「你們沒有念過：達味與那些同他一起的人，饑餓時，作了什麼？他怎樣進了天主的殿，吃了供餅？這供餅原是不准他吃，也不准同他在一起的人吃，而是只許司祭吃。或者你們在法律上沒有念過：在安息日，司祭在聖殿內違犯了安息日，也不算為罪過嗎？但我告訴你們：這裏有比聖殿更大的。假如你們瞭解『我喜歡仁愛勝過祭獻』是什麼，你們就決不會判斷無罪的人了，因為人子是安息日的主」。

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 12:1-8

1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” 3 He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless? 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 And if you had known what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is lord of the Sabbath.”

「人子是安息日的主。」(瑪12:8)
舊約時代，安息日為聖日，是基於天主以六天造了天地萬物，第七天停工休息。當天除嚴禁工作外，還應召集聖會。(肋23:3) 可惜，以民自充軍後，由於沒有了聖殿，安息日的團聚訴求，形同虛設，繼而祇顧外表的『猶太(形式)主義』成為當時主流思想。
教會成立初期，以一週的第一天為聖日，作為紀念救主復活的日子。在那一天，亦是基督徒團聚的日子。
嚴格來說，為法利賽人看來，耶穌的門徒掐麥穗吃，算是違反安息日的禁令。
不過，門徒真的可能餓了！他們也許得到耶穌的許可或默認，才掐麥穗吃。因此耶穌公開的說：「人子是安息日的主。」他有權更改法律。況且，耶穌以『我喜歡仁愛勝過祭獻』作為論點。
安息日是慶祝創世的日子、救世的日子，值得慶祝。
